Wouldn’t it be great if doing something free and simple for five minutes a day could change your life?
The good news is that it can! (Even if you miss a few days here and there :-).) Anaerobic exercise can change your life; and so can meditation.
There is a myth that meditation is difficult: many articles and books describe meditation as hard, time-consuming, something that “ordinary” people with “ordinary” lives can’t do; articles and books discourage the few brave souls who try meditating by telling them they’re doing it wrong.
Fortunately meditation isn’t hard; it doesn’t require special skills or abilities; and it’s actually pretty hard to do it wrong. Also it doesn’t conflict with any beliefs or faiths: rather than undermine one’s religion, most people report that meditation strengthens and deepens it.
If you’d like to try, simply identify a quiet place and start. Go to that place and sit still for five minutes every day. Or most days. The changes might not happen immediately, but over time you will notice a profound difference in your life. You will notice that you are more peaceful, more attentive, more present and focused. You’ll find that you are able to more readily access that quiet and centered-ness at will during the day. There are lots of other benefits, too: you will likely find you are more creative; that you get sick less; that the quality of your sleep improves; and that your energy is better and you win more business.
So just find a quiet place and try it; five minutes a day – what have you got to lose? You can sit on a chair, on the floor, or on a cushion. Just go to your quiet place and sit still, pay attention to your breathing, and notice whatever is happening. You may hear noises, see movement, or notice thoughts of the day ahead; you might notice that your mind has drifted; or you might feel an itch on your nose. That’s all there is to it: sit still and pay attention. Sometimes it will feel great, sometimes it will feel hard, but it’s all meditation. Just make a commitment to yourself that you will take five minutes each morning or evening to meditate, and be patient and forgiving with yourself when you miss that date with yourself.
