Nishant Mehta is a returning guest on the show. You can listen to the previous conversation at Nishant Mehta: Remembering to Play.
As Head of School at The Children’s School (TCS) in Midtown Atlanta since 2013, Nishant leads this progressive elementary school in creating a culture of excellence and experiential learning. During his tenure, he has been instrumental in shaping a making space for elementary students called the Innovator’s Playground. Maker Faire Atlanta marked the first time there has been a maker space created specifically for elementary students like the Innovator’s Playground.
He also developed TCS University, a personal and professional development institute, to further lifelong learning in parents and educators. TCS University promotes focus on learning through innovative play and cultivating passion. Nishant also launched the Super Teacher Project, encouraging TCS faculty and staff to apply for grants to further explore creativity and curiosity in teaching methods.
Nishant has worked extensively with the NAIS, having served on the Curriculum/ Technology Task Force to develop curricular, marketing and financial opportunities for independent schools. His passion for innovation has led to multiple speaking opportunities and to his appointment as a member of the Board of Trustees (former member) at the Lowell School in Washington, D.C. and more recently at the Ashville School in Asheville, N.C.
Lessons from the Show
Nishant talked to us about his life and career and offered us many wonderful lessons that point us towards an authentic, happy and fulfilling life and career including:
- The journey to leadership requires listening and reflecting, taking stock of where you are and where you came from, and above all, it requires vulnerability;
- We learn best when we are in our zone of discomfort;
- Nishant talks also about the importance of play in our lives, and refers to a poll which reveals lessons on the impact in our lives of how we played as a child.
